Summer Maintenance Tips

Here are a few tips to help you get ready for our hot and dry summer in the Reno,
Sparks area:

Check each window and exterior door for tightness. Air leaks are a major source
of energy inefficiency. If a dollar bill slips easily through the gap around your door or
you can see light, you are losing valuable cool air and letting heat in. Weather stripping
installed around the door frame will help keep this from occurring.

Change your HVAC filter monthly. Air conditioners, and furnaces need clean air to
work efficiently.

Plant a tree! Trees provide shade and clean the air. Be sure to plant away from water
mains and sewer lines.

Turn on your sprinkler systems. Click here for your watering days. Truckee
Meadows Water Authority enforces these watering days. Never water between the
hours of 1PM and 5PM.

Check your system for leaks and adjust sprinklers so they don't spray onto
sidewalks or in the gutter.  Most homeowners in Reno, and Sparks are now on meters.
Conserving water is not only necessary but will save you money.

Know the location of your master water shutoff valve. In many homes it's where
the waterline comes into your house from the street. Be sure everyone in the family
knows where it is, and what it does.

Drain your water heater once per year. The sediment in the bottom of the tank can
reduce efficiency and lower the lifespan of your water heater.

Replace the supply hoses to your washing machine with braided flex lines to
avoid a surprise flood if the old rubber hose breaks. Also get in the habit of turning off
the supply to the washing machine when you leave the home for an extended period of
time.

Inspect the top of your water heater to be sure there is no corrosion or leaking at
the inlet and outlet.
